What Floor Is Best For You?

Solid

This is wood milled from a single thick piece of hardwood.  It comes in a wide variety of lengths and widths.  Because of its thickness it can be sanded and refinished if you wish to do that.  It’s an ideal choice if you have an existing old wooden floor as your new floor can be nailed without having to install a plywood sub-floor.

Engineered

This is three to five wood layers stacked on top of each other in a cross-grain configuration.  It is then bonded together under intense heat and pressure.  Because of this process engineered floorboards are less likely to be affected by changes of temperature and humidity.  It is an ideal choice for installing onto a concrete floor base, or if you are planning to have under floor heating.

Laminate

Laminate flooring provides an upscale appearance with the characteristics of real wood and stone.  Its price, easy care and scratch and moisture resistance, make it a great choice for those on a tight budget.

What Look Do I Want?

Character

This is what defines the flooring and will include the species of tree, where it grew and what part of the tree has been used.

Shade

The lighter boards have been cut from closer to the bark (outside).  Knots indicate that a limb grew from that spot.  Growth rings are determined by the environment, climate and minerals absorbed whilst growing.  They all form the grain in the wood and impact on the appearance, but not on the strength of the wood.

Select & Prime

These terms describe boards virtually free from knots with refined grains and even colour tones.  These subtle character marks are created by carefully selected cuts from the centre of the tree.  They provide an elegant, flowing beauty to any room.

Natural & Classic

Terms used to describe some small knots, an attractive difference in grain size, random mineral marks and slight natural variations in colour.  Classic wood floors provide a rich and timeless beauty that has kept them popular for generations.

Rustic

This describes broad variations in knots, grain and mineral marks.  The unique characteristics of rustic wood floors create a charm, warmth and very distinctive statement in any home.

What Finish Do I Want?

Unfinished

Using unfinished wood gives you a free hand to decide exactly what colour and style you wish your floor to have.  This involves processes such as sanding, staining, top coats all of which can only be done when all other aspects of the floor installation have been completed.

Pre Finished

This is acrylic impregnated wood and is available for both solid & engineered flooring.  It is popular because it does not require the time, labour or cost of unfinished flooring and is therefore often the first choice for home owner’s builders and DIY enthusiasts.

Lacquered

A lacquered wood floor is hardwearing.  It gives a shiny, often reflective effect.  This is also a great way to make a room feel larger.

Oiled

An oiled floor delivers an aged, authentic warmth to a room.  It is great for areas of high traffic as this will add to the natural character.  An oiled floor will require ongoing maintenance to sustain its full effect.
